s/s 2011 paris: balenciaga.

nicolas ghesquiere easily weaves balenciaga between ladylike couture and street-smart styling, from the futuristic to the past perfect. this spring, he looked again to the street, more specifically 1980s british punk, to come up with a collection that while hard to wear in places, was so far away from what anyone else is doing. he used couture techniques on futuristic fabrics, like plastic dress hems and slick leathers, pieced together neon lace into sleeveless shirts, and oversized houndstooth patterns lacquered onto leather. even the “simple” pieces, like the draped dresses and knits were made more complicated through hand painted sequins and brushed silk. it was a feast for the eyes that made you want to have more, more, more.
