out of all the designers that are starting at storied houses this season, none has more pressure on them than alessandra facchinetti. she, who failed miserably at gucci after just one season, was put in charge of probably the most well known empires in fashion. i was very impressed with her pre-fall collection and what i liked about this show is that she didn’t try to do too much. it was elegant and sophisticated, with considerably better (and more wearable) daywear than her predecessor. some standout pieces included tulip sleeve jackets and coats, silk ruffle front halter dresses, razor thin pleated gowns, and frothy collar cocktail dresses. the thing that was missing was the drama (the runway presentation was indeed interesting: all white with a figure eight that the models walked around) and the signature valentino red (only found in full on one dress). while she was all smiles at the end of the presentations, the real test will come in july with the first couture show. all i can say is, better get ready.
