shannon galati (left), bfa fashion design and yaling hou, bfa textile design show off their portfolios

yesterday my friend candace and i attended academy of art university’s annual graduation fashion show at their new facilities at 5th and brannan. inside, scores of bfa and mfa graduates showed off their portfolios to attendees. one standout, ann gobeille, was inspired by the getty museum in l.a., as her work was very architectural (reminded me a bit of narciso rodriguez). another book we were impressed by was megan godfrey, who’s inspiration was a bit of boudoir chic, with lovely pastel fabrics mixed with navy and cream pinstripes.

sketches from shannon galati and yaling hou

we chatted with shannon galati and yaling hou, who collaborated on a collection that seemed far beyond their years. we were excited to see the sketches we flipped through come together on the runway.

after making our way to our seats, president elisa stephens made some remarks and fashion school president introduced the honorary doctorate recepients, zac posen, loulou de la falaise, and journalist robin givhan. then the lights came down, and the show began.

the first two collections were collaborative projects, the first between mfa design students and bfa fine art/sculpture students. the result was truly artistic and interesting accessories. the second was bfa designers developing clothing using terra-prisma packaging donated by eco-friendly winery french rabbit.

designs by nadia webster

some of our favorite collections were su-in yoon, mfa knitwear, who showed cozy sweaterdresses, layered knits and ruched vests cinched with leather obi belts; nadia webster, bfa knitwear, whose collection included kimono sleeve ribbed dresses, and cowl neck cocoon skirt dresses with pockets; and diana bustamante, bfa knitwear, whose looks included knit jumpers, a short sleeve empire waist sweaterdress, and a gorgeous knit flyaway duster.

designs by shannon galati and yaling hou

shannon and yaling’s collection looked great on the runway. the sophisticated silhouettes included a funnel neck coat, fitted sheath, and a high waist skirt with wide cap sleeve white shirt. yaling’s prints were a wonderful added punch to the designs.

dress and jacket by jenny schweitzberger

our final favorite collection was by jenny schweitzberger, bfa design, who’s collection was ralph lauren meets alexander mcqueen. her looks included a fur trimmed blazer over slim jodhpurs, fur collar cropped jacket over a bias striped dress, a long “officer’s” coat, silk low neck dress and fur stole, and a great suit with flyaway jacket and skinny ankle pant and an antler trim leather bag.

if you missed the runway show today, you’ll be able to see work from all the graduates at the academy of art spring show, which starts on may 24.
