tearing up my heart.

i’ve been remiss in talking about the f/w ad campaigns, mainly because most of them suck. the best thing is that there has been an overall lack of celebrities this season, but also tons of new girls snagging major campaigns. the biggest news is that pete doherty joined kate moss in the roberto cavalli ads, and that suvi koponen replaced a pregnant natalia vodianova for calvin klein (although apparently just for this season). after a few dalliances with celebrity, miu miu is back to models, even if it is laetitica casta (and lindsay lohan found a new line to sell in jill stuart). marc jacobs has also abandoned the celebs this season in favor of seventeen girls, even if they are shot from far away.

alot of the ads have appeared already, but here are a few of my standouts.

my favorite ads so far have to go to balenciaga. shot by david sims, the ads feature suvi and anabela belikova in what looks like an old mansion (with modern touches like a plasma tv and a wii). the juxtaposition between suvi’s cool as ice, straight ahead pose and anabela leaping, clutching her face is very unsettling…almost like “the shining.” i liked the s/s ads with coco (i could see the story the ads were trying to tell with the “android” like character in suburbia), but i LOVE these ads. i want to know the rest of the story, or at least where the story is going.

even though i haven’t been a fan of the clothes, chloé’s ads have been my favorite for the past few years. interesting mix of girls, great styling and art direction, and of course, wonderful photography from inez van lamsweerde & vinoodh matadin. for this season, they went with anja rubik (loving her haircut!), freja beha erichsen and shalom harlow. the ads have a great 70s “hanging in the basement with my girls” vibe that chloé does so well. and adding freja and shalom to the mix was a great change.

inez and vinoodh also shot the ysl campaign for the first time with great results. i was very skeptical at first to hear that gisele was cast for this, thinking she was a bit too sexy for this quiet collection, but she looks stunning. the shots have a great haunting feel to them…and gisele really nailed the fragile yet beautiful girl look.

bottega veneta always has very elegant collections, but the ad campaigns are usually very lackluster (although i liked last season’s with chanel iman, julia, cecelia, etc). this time around, they chose blockbuster photographer annie leibovitz and the results are a very ethereal, almost sexy campaign. the group shot of anja, inguna and kim noorda is gorgeous, and the styling is wonderful.
