patrick robinson backstage at his f/w 06.07 paco rabanne show

gap inc. has named patrick robinson, formerly of perry ellis and paco rabanne and the current target go international designer, executive vice president for design at gap and gap body. this came as a complete shock to me, but it does make sense. in an article with the wall street journal, robinson said working with the target team was very easy, as they “don’t have 25 people weighing in,” and he even went so far as to say “i won’t take another job in the designer market because i just don’t believe in it,” he says. “it doesn’t excite me anymore.” robinson starts his new role on may 26.

the gap has had some success recently with gap design editions and its summer collection, and also brought back gary muto, former head of gap (back when times were good) and the now-defunct forth & towne division. after patrick’s stellar go international collection where friends have told me it’s the most wearable yet, i have no doubt that he can make the gap stylish yet true to its heritage. here’s hoping robinson’s clothes are in stores in time for christmas!
