the friday five.

friday five Uncategorized

the fall/winter shows have just wrapped up and some ad campaign castings have already been confirmed. freja beha erichsen will continue for the third season in a row as the face of chanel, this time alongside abbey lee kershaw. as per usual, the campaign will be shot by karl lagerfeld. raquel zimmerman will be back as the face of chloe as well as fronting a new fragrance from the french house.

kim noorda in the f/w 10.11 ysl show

in the feburary issue of vogue, there was a feature on lara stone and her struggles in the modeling world of fitting in as a “normal” girl in a world of waifs. now in the april issue, fellow dutch model kim noorda gives a touching, heartbreaking and real look inside her personal journal, how she dealt with her food demons, and the reactions she witnessed from stylists, other models, and her own agency. she should be applauded for coming out and getting help, and hopefully more women (and men) will reach out and get the help they need with food and eating disorders.

1970s halston dresses

this week is the vintage expo at the san francisco concourse. clothing from as far back as the 1800s in every style imaginable is yours for the taking (or digging). it’s worth paying a bit more to get vip (read: early) entrance, and be sure to bring cash (as not every vendor takes plastic). the show runs saturday 10:30-6 and sunday 11-5.

joseph altuzarra with muse vanessa traina

the council of fashion designers of america have announced the nominations for their annual awards this week, and the names read like a who’s who of american design. one of the more hotly contested categories should be the swarovski award for womenswear with media and industry darlings prabal gurung, joseph altuzarra and jason wu competing. alexander mcqueen will be awarded a special tribute award, michael kors will receive the geoffrey beene lifetime achievement award, and iman the fashion icon award. the cfda’s will be held on june 7 at lincoln center’s alice tully hall.

sasha pivovarova in mcqueen from us vogue september 2008

finally, just about every magazine has a tribute to alexander mcqueen in their april issue. one of my favorite reads was us vogue’s hamish bowles, who tells of the first time he was to meet the designer through isabella blow (mcqueen was a now-show, calling bowles later to say ‘he could give a flying f— for american vogue.’), his brief yet game changing years at givenchy, and why mcqueen loved the show. the show is one of the things about mcqueen i will miss the most.
