even though i was born in the 70’s, i wouldn’t say i’m a lover of seventies style. that is except caftans. my mom, grandmother and aunts were all fans of the silhouette…i remember seeing them on a warm summer day, lemonade or iced tea in hand, the caftan blowing in the breeze. my grandmother was also a big fan of the head scarf, so all together it could be quite a look, but one that they completely owned.
flash forward some years, and i’ve rediscovered how chic a caftan can be. first, it was one that i bought last year for a caftan party at coppola winery, then more recently via les méchantes. what started out as an online store, became a pop-up shop and is now a full-fledged boutique at ghirardelli square. owned by ashley arabian, her mom delores, and friend kat ensign, it’s truly a case of three women following their dreams. the caftan is one of the most successful pieces in their private label, and it’s easy to understand why. it’s elegant without being fussy, easy without being sloppy, not to mention it comes in solids, sheers, and silk prints. i wore mine for a dinner in the neighborhood at florio (highly recommended if you’re ever in pacific heights), but it will also work for an evening wedding or a weekend brunch with flat sandals (if you’re taller). a chic one-piece worn by legendary women like elizabeth taylor, diana vreeland, and iman, and the great women in my family…sign me up.
