back in july, i got to go to the grand opening to the kim+ono boutique in chinatown and pick out the kimono of my choice. i’ve been a fan of kimonos for a while (remember this look from coachella?) and when i saw this purple silk floral kimono, i knew this was the one. the color is so bold and interesting and i could see wearing it year round.

kim+ono is a new venture from old shanghai, a local 30-year old company that’s now being taken into a new phase by the founder’s daughters tiffany and renee tam. the sisters grew up going on buying trips with their parents and got to see first-hand the detail and care that went into making kimonos. after taking over the business in 2004 and seeing kimonos trend in the fashion world, the duo decided to move from online to a storefront. the store (729 grant between sacramento and clay) has not only short and long hand painted silk kimonos but also housewares and beauty (many from california-based brands), all in a zen-like space.

kimonos can be overly feminine, especially one like this in a striking print, so i opted to tone down the girliness by adding a graphic hoodie and high-waist straight fit jeans. a pair of light blue pointy toe pumps add a sexy touch and also pull out some of the color in the kimono. i think it’s just as chic like this as it is with a pair of slim back pants, turtleneck or lace blouse or a little sparkly mini. have you been wearing kimonos as outerwear? i’d love to hear how you’ve been styling them…
