the magazines of march are the second largest issues of the year, and a chance for editors to showcase the best of spring fashion and to choose a cover subject that is sure to move newsstand issues. but for the most part, i am disappointed with the covers, actresses and models gracing this important issue.
vogue probably took the biggest risk of all with its jennfer hudson cover. there has been all kinds of debate as to why she has the cover, and it comes down to three words: andre leon talley. talley has become hudson’s fairy godmother (much like he did with renee zellweger) and anna wintour knows what sells magazines. this being the “power” issue, there are articles and interviews with those vogue sees as being on the cusp, like michelle williams, selma blair, nancy pelosi, and ivanka trump. although i am very happy that hudson is on the cover (only the fifth black woman to appear since wintour has been in charge), the images are horrible. jennifer is a gorgeous black woman, and her editorial could have been, and should have been better.
w also takes a big risk, putting ellen degeneres on its cover. the article and accompanying images are great, although i wished they would have pushed the envelope a bit more. i mean, this is a magazine that has published pictures of kate moss and tom ford nude, dolce & gabbana almost nude, and brangelina playing house 1950s style. inside there’s also a great editorial shot by mert & marcus with coco rocha, snejana, kinee, and denisa dvorakova and another with karen elson shot by craig mcdean.
bazaar allows victoria beckham to style katie holmes for her main editorial, with interesting results. in the article, she talks about life with tom, being a mom and stepmom and getting back to work. inside there’s an editorial with sarah ferguson, and a beautiful ed with anja rubik shot by camilla akrans.
jessica simpson is on elle for the third time in three years. for what reason, i don’t know. she doesn’t have a new album or movie coming out, so i presume it’s to talk (again) about her breakup with nick lachey.
the best parts of this issue: an interview and editorial with danielle, the winner of america’s next top model cycle 6, and an editorial with zoe kravitz, both shot by gilles bensimon.
two magazines that still believe models should be on fashion magazine covers are uk vogue, who have daria werbowy by nick knight and vogue paris (natasha poly by inez & vinoodh). both have some amazing editorials, with freja and julia in uk vogue, and jessica miller, coco rocha and freja in vogue paris.
