too many times gwyneth paltrow is on mag covers, all doom and gloom, and how she’s stripped down, living in london with chris martin, apple and moses and (sort of) dissing america. on her press tour for iron man, i’ve noticed a happier, lovelier, more fun gwyn, showing off those killer legs in some racy minis, smiling and geniuely looking like she’s having fun again. more evidence of this is july’s harpers bazaar, where she’s looking absolutely radiant in versace (with some dangerous cutouts).
overall, however, this issue is pretty weak, with uninspired eds, and a gross misuse of some very competent models. first off, there’s “the news from paris” by anthony ward (styled by melanie ward) and featuring newly platinum anja rubik. it’s probably my favorite of the eds since they are shot inside a room with some environmental elements. i’ve seen her do way better, so even this is not doing it for me.
hilary rhoda is back and blonde in “highlights from milan” by greg kadel. as much as i love hilary, the drab grey background does nothing for her. i am hoping that this ed is the beginning of many more appearance from her, especially with couture and more fall eds coming up. carolyn murphy pops up in “new york trends” shot by peter lindbergh and styled by rachel zoe. don’t have a problem with the styling, but all lindbergh eds are starting to look the same…like a donna karan ad from the early 2000. also inside are short eds featuring elizabeth hurley (shot by terry richardson) and bridget moynahan, and one featuring the real housewives of new york (really bazaar?). july is notoriously a thin month, and this is no exception…read it at the beach, then throw it away.
