when it was announced that harvey weinstein had bought halston, and had teamed with rachel zoe and tamara mellon (of jimmy choo) to relaunch the brand, i was looking forward to seeing the results the way gapers watch a car wreck. like in the matrix, this is the sixth time the brand has started anew…would this time be the charm? after former versace creative director of womenswear marco zanini was named head designer, i had a glimmer of hope. but then today i saw the clothes.
there was some good: a lovely silk shirtdress, belted jersey dresses, high waist flares, and some gorgeous eveningwear. but the colors were too seventies (orange, drab brown, ochre) and some of the outfits (jumpsuits?) were just too retro. but there is enough here for count for a decent start, and those fashion lovers who log onto net-a-porter tomorrow can buy two looks from the show.
