i remember the first time i became aware of rachel roy. it was probably around 2005 and i was so happy to discover a female african-american designer whose purpose was dressing women. professional, powerful, multitasking women like herself, a businesswoman raising two girls. it’s crazy to think that she’s been in business for 15 years, and in that time launched the more youthful rachel rachel roy at macy’s, wrote a book, and became a un ambassador. now she’s repositioned her main line, rachel roy collection as a contemporary line which launched exclusively at nordstrom. the line is perfect for the woman whose got a lot going on and needs to look polished while doing it, with suiting, dresses, jumpsuits, and tops in sizes 0-24 that max out at $350. the fall collection is built around a neutral palette of black and cream, with hits of blush and red, plus prints like plaids, a graphic floral, and leopard and mix and match effortlessly.
i had the opportunity to pick out a look and this cream windowpane check suit was the first thing i wanted. what i love about a suit is not only are there a bunch of ways to wear it, but i feel inherently fierce when i put one on. this one is a comfortable stretch twill ponte that feels structured but not stiff. the jacket is a bit cropped and boxy, which makes it perfect for layering, but with a higher neckline, it also means you can wear it on its own (as i did). i paired it with my new proenza schouler mules i treated myself to for my birthday for a nice pop of color, some neutral tassel earrings, and a simple black clutch.
i’m excited to see how the line expands into not only other categories like accessories and home, but also into retail in the form of pop-up’s. you can find rachel roy collection at nordstrom.com and at select nordstrom stores.
rachel roy collection double breasted jacket (wearing a medium for a more oversized look) and pant c/o (wearing a 4), proenza schouler mules, chanel wallet on chain (pre-owned here and similar for less), loren stewart necklaces, banana republic earrings (similar)
