accessory design winner derek lam
last night was the cfda awards, and there really only one surprise among the winners.
one no-brainer was ralph lauren nabbing the menswear of the year award, in a year when he was also named american fashion legend. the man originally known as ralph lifshitz certainly has made a name for himself. derek lam’s win for accessories designer of the year was another easy pic. his bags have been seen on many a celeb, and his recent foray into shoes produced many waitlists. finally, phillip lim’s win for emerging talent in womenswear was also expected. this media darling’s s/s collection was a knockout and he’s also jumping into accessories for fall. the other winners were rag and bone for menswear emerging talent, and loeffler randall’s jessie randall winning accessories emerging talent, both the most recognizable names in their respective categories.
jack mccollough and lazaro hernandez of proenza schouler took home womenswear of the year honors, quite expected after their editor fave collections of s/s and f/w. but sharing the award with them in a rare tie was oscar de la renta, who has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts recently with his son and daughter working with him, and more celebrities embracing his designs on the red carpet.
fashion-wise, the models once again outshone the celebs, except for ashley olsen, who was gorgeous in a long black double-breasted tuxedo dress, a simple white clutch, and pulled back hair. irina lazaraneau hung up the hippie duds for a modern white ruffled front gown by phillip lim, and liya kebede looks amazing in a michael kors leopard and sequin minidress. style.com, of course, has lots of pics.
