international flavor.

Uncategorized

the oscars last night featured a bevy of international flavor from the winners to the designers. my favorite moment? the winning speeches from daniel day-lewis, marion cotillard, tilda swinton, & javier bardem, and jon stewart allowing best song winner marketa irglova to come out and make her speech after being cut off (shame, shame!) here are my picks for the most fashionable of the evening.

best dressed: keri russell in nina ricci
simple, sophisticated and elegant. even though russell was only there to introduce a best song nominee, she made the most of her on-time appearance in a stunning nina ricci gown. she worked it much better than ellen pompeo did of her ricci at the sag awards (put the train down!)

best in red; biggest upgrade (from last year):
anne hathaway in marchesa
after her big bow blunder last year, she really shined in this marchesa that was just shown in new york a few weeks ago. red was a big trend last night, but the detail on her choice made it my pic. her makeup and hair let the dress take center stage.

best in black: tilda swinton in lanvin
i know alot of people did not like this dress, but swinton gravitates toward avant-garde pieces…you’ll never expect to see her in chanel haute couture. this choice is better than her sag effort and she looks amazing.

best baby bump: jessica alba in marchesa
again, not a popular choice, but alba simply glowed in this. marchesa was made for red carpets.

best in color: amy adams in proenza schouler
while jack and lazaro aren’t known for their red-carpet pieces, this really works for adams’ coloring. i would only change the bag to a small clutch.

biggest downgrade: nicole kidman in balenciaga
kidman is a balenciaga loyalist and although she is pregnant, her dress just wasn’t anything special. and we know nicolas can make a great dress for a pregnant woman, so i don’t think that was her excuse. her l’wren scott-designed necklace was interesting, but could have benefited from a few less layers.

quite a few attendees busted out the couture including penelope cruz, vanessa paradis, marion cotillard, and hilary swank, but honestly the only one that worked for me was vanessa, as she wears chanel HC exclusively on the red carpet. for worst dressed, even though it’s an improvement over last year, i have to go with jennifer hudson in roberto cavalli. in black or maybe a navy or plum, this would have been gorgeous. but in white, it just highlights her chest. queen latifah and other plus size woman have managed to look great while embracing their size, and i wish jhud would too.
