fall weather hasn’t officially hit sf (it was in the high 70s this weekend), but that doesn’t mean i haven’t been getting my closet ready for cooler temperatures. i’ve talked about this before, but i really want to work toward a thoughtful closet that is filled with pieces i love that are interesting but also well-made & versatile. while i love the idea of a capsule wardrobe, i know that just isn’t me. however the pieces i see in capsule collections are ones that create a solid foundation, then you layer in items that show off more of your personality. i’ve spent years on the foundation items—a classic coat, neutral cashmere sweaters, a black suede pump, high waist jeans, button down shirts—and now i’m ready to supplement it with this fall shopping list.
one of things i’ve been doing less of is shopping fast fashion. don’t get me wrong, i understand it’s a quick fix and a cheaper way to try out trends or knockoffs from designers that may be out of reach. however, with so many amazing consignment and reseller sites around, like the real real (where i consign items), vestiaire collective, depop, and poshmark (not to mention ebay), you can usually find designer items for less.
the first thing i usually do right after the end of a fashion week (in this case february), is check out the shows more closely and use moda operandi to see the individual pieces from the runway. i also love that moda lets you pay half upfront and half when the item comes in, and you can still return it if it doesn’t work. one of the first things i knew i wanted was this proenza schouler skirt. i loved the thicker crepe fabric that is super versatile, the color palette, and details like topstitching & side pleats make it feel cooler.
i also knew i wanted something with feathers; there’s a gorgeous turtleneck in the same proenza collection, but i wanted something more versatile. this cinq a sépt sweater not only has fun feather trim, but the color is unexpected and can work beyond fall. tibi was another collection that i loved, and i picked up two pieces from my favorite local shops: a sleeveless green sweater from hero shop and a plum/brown midi skirt from mcmullen’s new palo alto boutique.
low heels are something else that i have been wearing more and more, and my beige two-tone chanel slingbacks have seen better days. i got a great deal on these joie heels (they also have a cute snakeskin heel) by using my shopbop birthday discount.
what’s on your fall shopping list and how have you switched up your shopping strategy this season?
