surf’s up.

celeb spotting collections

one of my favorite collections from spring was proenza schouler’s take on the skate and surf culture. jack mccollough and lazaro hernandez managed to mix tailoring with tie dye and scuba elements to make clothes that real women want to wear. but in addition to the real women (including yours truly) that love the ps aesthetic, there are also the celebs and socialities that gravitate to the masculine/feminine mix they do so well.

two women who have been longtime ps supporters are lauren santo domingo and victoria traina. both chose ps pieces for monday night’s vogue/cfda vogue fund awards. santo domingo chose a tribal print cocktail dress with dropped waist and feathered hem, and traina (who once interned for the boys) paired her tiered cobalt skirt with a tight black scuba top and balenciaga stretch booties. i appreciate that both let the clothing shine on its own–santo domingo wore no jewelry and black ps sandals while traina also went the black route and added wavy hair that added some lightness to the overall look.

kristen stewart has been thrust into the spotlight with the success of the twilight series and is new to the red carpet scene. her style can be described as schizophrenic at best (hervé leger stretch minis then a oscar de la renta ballgown?), but she is most successful when she is dressing her age, and this ps ensemble fits the bill. although she wore a look as it was seen on the runway, she wasn’t completely matchy-matchy, opting for black pumps instead of sandals. i would love to see stewart approach the red carpet in a more youthful way (see dakota fanning or emma watson) and leave the grown up dresses to the grown ups.

seeing these looks makes me excited to check out the collection when it hits stores in the next few months. who do you think did the best job of pulling off proenza schouler?
