the golden globes were back this year, and in all the commercials, the promise was that “the glitz and glamour of the globes was back.” well i know what was back–being safe. the globes are the perfect opportunity to try something different, like something more avant garde or a cocktail dress, but instead there was lots of sameness: strapless gowns, jewels, and updos. there were two women who always make interesting fashion choices that stood out among the crowd. maggie gyllenhall looked amazing in s/s 09 lanvin that she had lengthened from the runway version (one case where this actually worked for the better) and added a signature grosgrain belt. her accessories were standout but kept to a minimum.
and if anyone had any doubt that jennifer lopez was a glamazon, look no further than her rocking this s/s 09 marchesa gown. if you hadn’t seen the pics splashed everywhere, you would never know she had twins not too long ago.
there were a few celebs that took a risk and won. i loved robert downey jr’s varvatos suit with sneakers, america ferrera in a cute odlr one shoulder cocktail dress (could have been a tad less poufy) and i didn’t even mind heidi klum in vintage galanos. but many others (and i’m looking at renee, cameron, drew, and blake lively) didn’t fare so well. i want to see more optimism on the red carpet, not a parade of black/navy or nude colored dresses. here’s to hoping the sag’s and the oscars are much better.
