unless you’ve been under a rock (or unlike myself, just not into bags), the hottest bag on the market is by mansur gavriel. the simple leather bucket bag, some with contrast color lining that burst onto the scene around this time last year and were promptly sold out everywhere. a few fashion lovers, blair eadie and garance doré among them, seemed to champion them before anyone else, but the bucket bag shape is not new. with most things bag-related, it all started with the french, specifically louis vuitton.
the noé was the second bag created by gaston-louis vuitton (after the keepall) in 1932 when a champagne manufacturer contacted the brand about making a bag that could transport five bottles chicly. the noé’s flat base could hold four bottles and then the fifth was placed upside down in the center. as with most classic vuitton styles, the noé comes in a number of different colors and materials such as monogram canvas, epi, damier azur canvas, and monogram idylle canvas (a more graphic version with a white ground) plus seasonal/limited edition colorways. originally available in the classic and petit sizes, the noé bb is the newest style on the scene, a smaller style with an extra-long crossbody strap…similar to the mansur gavriel mini size.
now that the bucket shape is clearly back (i still have my jessica stam x rachel roy bucket bag from 2010), other designers are jumping on the bandwagon, with offerings in croc, snakeskin, perforated leather, vegan leather, and more if you’re not into the minimalist style of the gavriel. i’m still on the fence about the shape; it seems perfect for after five or the weekends, but i do find mine a challenge to get into. i have to say my heart skipped a beat when i saw the proenza (but when doesn’t it?)…i mean suede, leather, and snakeskin colorblocking!
